San Jacinto Battlefield Monument Near Deer Park Texas
Deer Park was founded in 1892 by Simon West. The name for the new town was inspired by an area privately owned deer preserve.

Deer Park is located in Harris County in the Houston metropolitan area.

The Petrochemical industry is what fuels the economy of modern era Deer Park, along with business activity along the Houston Ship Channel.

Deer Park is the Texas town closest to the San Jacinto Battleground State Historic Site where the Battle of San Jacinto took place on April 21, 1836. Winning the Battle of San Jacinto won Texas its independence from Mexico, which led to the founding of the Republic of Texas.

Due to being the location where the Battle of San Jacinto took place Deer Park considers itself the "Birthplace of Texas."

The Mexican surrender in the Battle of San Jacinto took place in Dr. George Moffitt  Patrick's cabin, which was located by nearby Buffalo Bayou. A replica of the Patrick Cabin has been built in Deer Park on Center Street in front of the Theatre Courts Building.

San Jacinto Battleground State Historic Site

The 1,200 acre San Jacinto Battleground State Historic Site is a National Historic Landmark where you will find the San Jacinto Battleground, the 570 feet tall San Jacinto Monument and the Battleship Texas.

You can take an elevator to the San Jacinto Monument's Observation level at 489 feet above the Battleground. The monument is built of reinforced concrete faced with Texas fossilized buff limestone. At the base of the monument's shaft you will find the San Jacinto Museum of Texas History where you will find exhibits tracing the region's history. "Texas Forever! The Battle of San Jacinto" is a 35 minute reliving of Texas history from the days of Spanish rule in Mexico to the arrival  of the Americans. This history lesson uses 42 projectors to create its multi-image show.

The Battleship Texas is docked at a permanent slip at the Battleground. Battleship Texas is the only surviving pre World I dreadnought. The ship was used as the flagship in World War II's June 6, 1944 D-Day invasion.
