The Piney Woods is sometimes referred to as East Texas or Deep East Texas. 

The Piney Woods Region is so named because much of the region is covered by tall pine tree forests. 

The Piney Woods Region is where the Texas Oil Boom began, in towns like Kilgore, Longview and Marshall

You can see the Spanish influence in the Piney Woods Region in towns like Nagodoches, which began as a Spanish fort in the 1700s. 

The Piney Woods has a lot of lakes, including Caddo Lake, which is the only natural lake in Texas. The Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center is in Athens in the Piney Woods Region.

Big Thicket National Preserve
The Big Thicket has been called the "biological crossroads of America" and the Ark of America. The diversity of species and terrains are what make the Big Thicket a special place. Hardwood pine forests are next to cypress forest, along with blackwater swamps and meadows.

Conroe
Located on the shores of a lake with the same name, Conroe is a short distance north of Houston with visitors finding good golfing, shopping, and anything you might want to do on a lake..

Gilmer
Gilmore is the home of the annual East Texas Yamboree where homage is paid to the sweet potato.

Huntsville
Huntsville is the burial place of Texas' first president and governor, Sam Houston - . Huntsville is also the location of Sam Houston State University, Sam Houston State Park, Sam Houston Museum, and the Sam Houston Statue and Visitors' Center. Huntsville is also the location of the Texas State Penitentiary where Texas does its executions.

Jefferson
Near Caddo Lake and Lake O' the Pines, Jefferson is near the Texas/Louisiana border and is known as the "Bed and Breakfast Capital of East Texas."

Kilgore
Kilgore was the childhood home of classical pianist Van Cliburn and the location of one of the world's biggest oil booms.

Marshall
Home of the annual Wonderland of Lights, from Thanksgiving to New Year's Day. One of the biggest holiday light shows in America.

Nacogdoches
Nacogdoches is the oldest town in Texas, it was originally a Spanish settlement. Over the years, Nacogdoches has mixed Texas hospitality with its Spanish heritage to make it a unique town.

New Boston
Home to the New Boston Market Days and Pioneer Days. 

Palestine
Known mostly for housing the Texas State Railroad and the Dogwood Trails Festival, Palestine is a classic Southern town deep in the Piney Woods.

Rusk
Cherokee County's county seat, the Piney Woods town of Rusk is a stop on the Texas Forest Trail with 32 state historical markers in town.

Tyler
Tyler, known as the "Rose Capital," is a step back in time to quaint Southern towns of yesteryear. Tyler State Park is nearby.

Texarkana
Located on the Texas/Arkansas border, Texarkana is actually two cities with the same name. Texarkana, Texas and Texarkana, Arkansas. Ross Perot grew up here.
