Sweetwater Texas Rattlesnake Roundup.Sweetwater, Texas is the Nolan County seat, with a population of 11,415. Sweetwater is located at the junctions of Interstate 20, U.S. Highway 80/84, Farm Road 419, State Highway 70 and the Sante Fe Railroad.

Sweetwater is named after nearby Sweetwater Creek, not because the local water is particularly sweet tasting.

Sweetwater got its start back in 1879 with the opening of a U.S. post office. By 1881 the first railroad reached Sweetwater, with the town soon become known as a railroad town with homes and businesses built along the rail lines.

In the 1900s oil refining came to Sweetwater, along with gypsum plants, clothing makers, an International Harvester factory, cotton processors, cement plants and other businesses, some of which continue in modern day Sweetwater.

In the 21st century Sweetwater is at the center of the Western Hemisphere's largest wind power generating area.

Taking place the second weekend of March since 1958 the annual Sweetwater Rattlesnake Roundup is the world's largest.
