First Generation 1. Cornelis SLOTEMAKER was born 8 Mar 1839 in Noord Scharwoude, Holland. He died 15 Nov 1919 in Lynden, Washington and was buried in Monumenta Cemetery, Lynden, Whatcom County, Washington. BIOGRAPHY: The story of Cornelis and Aagje begins in the Netherlands, in the village of Noord Scharwoude in the province of North Holland, in the spring of 1839. Residents of this village include two young families, with the surnames of Slotemaker and Keppel. They are on their way home from a Sunday morning worship service; both families had children baptized at this service. The babies, Cornelis Slotemaker and Aagje Keppel were placed in the same crib to sleep. The fond parents jestingly observed that this could well be the beginning of a lifelong relationship. This casual observation may well have reflected an unexpressed desire on the part of these parents. Aagje grew up to be a tenderhearted, affectionate, sensitive young woman with a rather delicate physique as was common for the girls of her generation. She was being prepared to take her place as a home-maker. Cornelis early in life indicated aggressiveness, a readiness to meet the challenges of life. He demonstrated a desire and ability to excel in many things he attempted. As neighbors, Cornelis and Aagje saw much of each other, they also attended the same school and the same church. Her delicate physique and tender compassion for anyone or anything appealed to him; while his bold aggressiveness gave her a sense of security. Complementing one another in this way soon led them to realize that they were more than friends and neighbors, they were lovers. This love was consummated in their marriage which took place on July 5, 1862. BIOGRAPHY: On July 5, 1912 Cornelis and Aagje celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary. This was a memorable event. The Spaan, DeVries and Slotemaker families now each numbering several persons were all present. Several friends and neighbors joined in the festivities. A beautiful summer day made the lawn party a grand success, and an occasion of humble gratitude to God. Cornelis married Aagje KEPPLE on 5 Jul 1862 in Holland. Aagje was born 13 Apr 1839 in Noord Scharwoude, Holland. She died 27 Dec 1914 in Lynden, Washington and was buried in Monumenta Cemetery, Lynden, Whatcom County, Washington. Daughter of Dirk Keppel and Bregtje Octjers. BIOGRAPHY: An event taking place in 1914 that requires attending is the death of Aagje in November. Her death was the first in the family circle since coming to Lynden. She was 75 years old. This left Cornelis living alone until the last 2 or 3 years of his life when he spent the winters at the Spaan home and the summers at the Slotemaker farm. This arrangement continued until November or December 1919, when Cornelis also left this earthly scene and joined Aagje in the heavenly mansions. He was 80 years old. Both Cornelis and Aagje died of what was then simply called "old age", a gradual depletion of ones energy resources, like a candle running out of fuel, the spirit leaves the worn out body. Their death marked the passing of the first generation of a family circle in America. Theirs was a colorful, eventful and adventurous period in history. They filled a small niche scarcely observed outside of their family circle and community. BIOGRAPHY: Although Cornelis and Aagje were 42 years of age when they came to America, Aagje never learned to speak English, and Cornelis barely enough to be able to communicate. Their grandchildren never spoke English to their grandparents, and the son of Cornelis and Aagje spoke only Dutch in their family homes until their oldest son started school, and it was in school that he learned his first English. They had the following children:
Second Generation 2. Antje SLOTEMAKER "Anna" (Cornelis) was born 5 Jun 1865 in Noord Scharwoude, Holland. She died 28 Oct 1956 in Lynden, Washington and was buried in Monumenta Cemetery, Lynden, Whatcom County, Washington. BIOGRAPHY: Noord Scharwoude is one of three villages on a dike. To the east of the dike were the vegetable islands, on the western side of the dike was pastureland. BIOGRAPHY: As a young child, Anna's father made cheese, and there was a special room in which the cheese was aged before taking it to nearby Alkmaar where the cheese auction took place. One day, Anna went into that room and took a bite out of several of the round cheeses. Of course, these cheese rounds did not go to market in Alkmaar. BIOGRAPHY: During the trip across the Atlantic, at the age of 17, Anna danced with the captain of the ship on several occasions. For those who grew up in Lynden among the Dutch-Americans who took such a strong stance against dancing, this is quite amazing. BIOGRAPHY: In his semi-retirement years, Henry got into the business of raising chickens, while his sons, Henry and John, ran the dairy. The chicken yard was large and enclosed with a woven fence. In the chicken yard a considerable number of fruit trees grew. Anna placed her stamp on the venture by planting climbing red roses growing on the woven fence area just to the east of their home. Between these blooms and the trimmed hedge was a graveled driveway to the barn. Indeed the whole layout was very attractive. Anna was always one with an eye for beauty. Whenever the family would go to Stanley Park in Vancouver, she was always picking up landscape ideas and different kinds of plants. On trips to Mt. Baker Lodge, Anna would exclaim "Prachtig!" (beautiful) while driving up the gorgeous mountain highway. Indeed she loved nature. BIOGRAPHY: Anna Slotemaker Spaan lived to be 92 years of age. Her last years were spent in the homes of her two daughters. She passed away in 1957. All her life she was never at a loss for words, but shortly before her passing when family visited, she hardly said a word, which was out of character. When Cora was asked what came over her mother, her reply was, "Ma was always a very proud woman. She had so many comments over the years about old people who were always repeating themselves. Now she says very little, for she is afraid she will be repeating herself" Anna married Henry SPAAN on 1887 in Orange City, Iowa. Henry was born 13 May 1858 in Pella, Iowa. He died 24 Nov 1941 in Lynden, Washington and was buried in Monumenta Cemetery, Lynden, Whatcom County, Washington. BIOGRAPHY: In Orange City, Iowa, the Spaan family were members of the Reformed Church in America. Henry was born in Pella, Iowa, before the Civil War. Shortly after the Dutch became interested in Sioux County, the Spaans joined the new settlement. Five years after the Slotemaker family arrived in Orange City, Anna Slotemaker married Henry Spaan. Not much is known of their courtship, but they were married on April 7, 1887. They settled on a farm Henry owned five miles due north of Orange City and a mile east of the settlement of Middleburg. This was a farm on which they raised corn and hogs. BIOGRAPHY: Somewhere around 1915 Henry purchased an Oldsmobile touring car which was driven by his three sons; it is not known how long the vehicle was in operation, but it stood for years deteriorating under a large spreading maple tree next to the barn, a great place for kids to play. Ultimately, Henry Harrison dismantled the car and on its chassis made a wagon bed. That wagon with its rubber tires sure rode a lot better than the steel wheeled wagon. Henry Harrison also bought a Ford Model T, and when the bachelor brothers went off to Alberta, Henry learned to drive the car they had; he had never driven until he was around 60. Henry and Anna lived next door to Henry Harrison Spaan and his family. At his son Henry's home, when the children saw Henry coming down the road, they would both shudder and become amused at his driving. It went well with Anna sitting in the back seat on the passenger side and he at the wheel; at the house, Anna was referred to as the back seat driver. Henry's expertise wasn't so great at slowing down when he came to the end of the street; this required a right hand turn and then after several yards a left hand turn onto the driveway to the garage. This meant driving to the right of Anna's prized flower display and the rock garden which was created to guide him onto the garage driveway. From the vantage of the home of Henry Harrison Spaan, they had a full view of his maneuvers around the bends which did not include very much reduction in his speed. Henry Harrison Spaan would say, "There goes Dad on two right wheels and then on two left wheels." A couple of times he cut the left turn short and damaged the rock garden! His use of brakes was an abrupt action. Sometimes he'd hit the far side of the garage, knocking it loose from its foundation. One time he damaged it to the degree that Cornie decided to remove the wall and just set it in its place without firm attachment. So is was the wall on occasion would fall flat on the ground and the car would be on top of it with its two front wheels. BIOGRAPHY: April 7, 1937 was a date to be remembered. It was Henry and Anna's 50th anniversary. The event was celebrated as an open house. A large number of callers were treated to delicious food served in elegant style. In her black stylish dress (her usual color of choice), Anna received her guests. Henry enjoyed making conversation with his friends. In the evening the whole immediate family celebrated together. This included John and Tillie Slotemaker. They had the following children:
BIOGRAPHY: Deceased as an infant in Orange City, Iowa. Anna would, on occasion, reflect on her sorrow in losing this child. + 9 F v. Agnes SPAAN was born 30 Jun 1894 and died 14 Jan 1959. + 10 M vi. John Dixon SPAAN was born 12 Sep 1898 and died 15 May 1970. 11 F vii. Henrietta SPAAN was born in Orange City, Iowa. She died in Orange City, Iowa. BIOGRAPHY: Not too long after the turn of the century, Henrietta joined the family. Her life was short, for she passed away when she was four years of age. 3. Jan SLOTEMAKER "John" (Cornelis) was born 6 Aug 1870 in Noord Scharwoude, North Holland. He died 16 Dec 1950 in Lynden, Washington and was buried in Monumenta Cemetery, Lynden, Whatcom County, Washington. BIOGRAPHY: Making a move of some 2000 miles to the wooded wilderness of the Pacific Northwest from Orange City, Iowa was a decision that was not rashly made. Although the reports were favorable, one cannot see things clearly with the eyes of others. John left Orange City around March 1, 1900 to scout out the Pacific Northwest; he boarded the train that took him to the most northwesterly corner of the state of Washington, and the nation. The last 15 miles - from Bellingham to Lynden - had to be covered on foot or by horse drawn vehicle. Lynden was the destination because here were acquaintances. BIOGRAPHY: Lynden had the potential of becoming an excellent agricultural community. Soil types ranged from peat and muck bottoms to up-land sandy and silt loams to river bottom loams and clay. However, before farming could begin, the big timber had to be cleared away. Logging and lumbering was the main industry. But after the trees have been felled and the logs hauled away, the land is a long way from being ready for farming; six-foot fir or cedar stumps present a formidable obstacle to a plow. BIOGRAPHY: John got a job at a saw mill about 3 miles west of Lynden near what is now the Loomis Trail Road. A creek was dammed, creating a mill pond into which the logs were dumped for floating them to the mill. While John never talked about his work at this mill nor the shingle mill at which he later worked during the six months he stayed before returning to Iowa, he did tell us about the night he spent in the mill bunk house. Most of the employees at the mills were single men, many of whom stayed only a short time and then moved on to another job. To accommodate these transients, the mills had a bunk house and a commissary. The meals at the commissary were good, but the bunkhouse was something else. He had scarcely gotten in his bunk when he felt the familiar sting of a flea. As he reached over to the area of his anatomy where he hoped to catch the culprit, he felt another sting, then a half dozen at once. It seemed as if the whole family, including uncles and aunts, cousins and in-laws had all converged on him. John always claimed that fleas were partial to him, if there was a fly within a mile it would find him. He realized that he couldn't survive the night in the bunkhouse. So he went outside, shook the fleas out of his clothes the best he could and headed for the barn where the horses were kept, and slept n the hay, after the few fleas that still clung to him had eaten their fill and were sleeping it off themselves. When morning came he faced the problem of where to spend the next night. He knew that sleeping in the barn was not permitted, nor did he want to resort to such accommodations. Besides, he was sure that a horde of fleas was already on his trail to the barn! BIOGRAPHY: John returned to Iowa and the decision to move to Washington was made. The next few weeks were busy ones preparing for 2 big events: the wedding of John and Tillie, and the move to Washington. The wedding date was set for November 26. All other preparations having been completed, they started on their journey the following day. John married Tetje KRAMER "Tillie", daughter of Hendrika KRAMER and Jitsche BOERSMA, on 26 Nov 1900 in Orange City, Iowa. Tillie was born 28 Jan 1878 in St. Jakobi, Holland. She died 30 Jan 1964 in Lynden, Washington and was buried in Monumenta Cemetery, Lynden, Whatcom County, Washington. BIOGRAPHY: Following the passing of John in 1950, Tillie continued to live on the farm for some time. Joe Estie had converted his garage to an apartment, which proved to be an ideal arrangement for Tillie. She lived in this apartment for some 12 years. She was within walking distance of the church, rest home, and the homes of many of her personal friends, as well as a convenient place for her grandchildren to stop in. Much of her time was occupied by needle work, especially knitting. She must have knitted thousands of garments of various descriptions in her lifetime, as she learned to knit t the early age of 8 years while still in the Netherlands. She was also an avid reader, but she was able to knit and read at the same time, so there was no conflict of interest between the two activities. BIOGRAPHY: About a week before her 86th birthday she had a mild heart attack. She was taken to a Bellingham hospital, was treated and discharged a few days later. She was taken to the home of Henry and Fanny on the farm, where she suffered a stroke from which she did not recover. On January 29, 1964, just one day after her 86th birthday, she had a second stroke which was fatal. Henry and Fanny were present with her when she breathed the final breath of her earthly life. Absent from the body, present with the Lord, and with loved ones who had preceded her. Daughter of Hendrik Kramer and Jitsche Boersma.
John and Tillie had the following children:
BIOGRAPHY: In the spring of 1917 Jessie, now 3 years of age, had measles. As sometimes happens with measles, it leaves an after-effect. This happened with Jessie. She did not regain normal health. She tired easily and complained about pain in joints, especially the knees. Medication may have given some relief, but no cure. The disease did not progress noticeably during the summer. Since Tillie's previous visit to Iowa when Agnes was a year old, Tillie's father had died, and her mother had remarried. With her mother's advancing age, and the regular correspondence stimulating the desire, and having another little girl to accompany her, the decision was made that Tillie should make another visit to relatives in Iowa, which she did in early September, taking Jessie with her. As Neil and Henry were both out of school, John and the two boys performed a 3-way bachelors act for the nearly 2 months that Tillie and Jessie were away. Agnes, Dick and Otto stayed with relatives; Dick at Spaans, and Agnes and Otto with the Van Zwol family.
18 M vii. Baby Boy SLOTEMAKER was born 16 Mar 1916 in Lynden, Washington. He died 16 Mar 1916 in Lynden, Washington and was buried in Monumenta Cemetery, Lynden, Whatcom County, Washington. BIOGRAPHY: When the family moved into their new house there was no road, only a road right-of-way that was neither graded nor graveled. The road was graveled as far as the property line on the west, while the right-of-way extended to the property line on the east, which the family referred to as the end of civilization. There were neighbors living on places adjoining the farm, both on the east and on the west. About 2 years after moving in to the house, a new house and barn were built across the road. This place was bought and occupied by a family of recent Dutch immigrants named Van Weerthuizen with whom the family had much neighborly relationship in the years that followed. This road right-of-way was almost, and sometimes totally impassable during the rainy season, and especially during a winter thaw. In March of 1916, Van Weerthuizen was coming home with a load of hay he had bought. The children were watching from their yard, expecting at any moment that he would be stuck in a deep rut or spill his load. When he hit an extra deep rut, Tillie made a startled exclamation: "there he goes!" Well, he made it home with a load of hay. A few days later, Tillie had a still-born baby boy, full term and well formed, but lifeless. Tillie told the family later that at the moment she made that startled exclamation she felt a sudden movement of the child, and then no more. The older children were much awed by this sudden family tragedy.
Third Generation
Cora married Fredrick Kryn POLINDER "Fred", son of Gerrit POLINDER and Johanna, on 1 May 1913 in Lynden, Washington. Fred was born 29 Jan 1889 in Lynden, Washington. He died Sep 1986 in Lynden, Washington and was buried in Monumenta Cemetery, Lynden, Whatcom County, Washington. They had the following children:
6. Cornelius SPAAN (Antje SLOTEMAKER, Cornelis). BIOGRAPHY: The two bachelor brothers, Cornie and John took leave of the United States and went to Canada during World War I. At the war's end in 1917 John returned to his parents' home, but Cornie continued wheat farming in southern Alberta. Just before the Great Depression, Cornie returned from southern Alberta and his wheat farm occupation. Both Cornie and John remained bachelors living in the home of their parents until the 1930's arrived. When Anna's cousin and her mother arrived from Des Moines and Newton, Iowa, to visit the De Hoog family in 1928, they also went to Henry Harrison Spaan's house and slept in the guest room. When Henry Sr. showed Marie Muilenburg his chicken enterprise and they were walking through the orchard-chicken yard, they came upon Cornie up in a tree picking cherries. Shortly, Marie was also on the ladder. This began a romance which culminated in marriage three years later. The wedding took place in the well known Little Brown Church in the Vale near Nashua, Iowa. BIOGRAPHY: Cornie's Washington ocupation became raising silver foxes on a plot of ground which was just within the western highland boundary of the Spaan farm. Every now and then a fox would escape its kennel and would find a restricted freedom within the outer fencing of the fox farm. For a kid, it was such fun chasing the fox into a trap to capture it and return it to its kennel. BIOGRAPHY: Cornie had taken over the dairy following his brother's departure for Iowa. Cornelius married Marie MUILENBURG. They had the following children:
7. Henry Harrison SPAAN (Antje SLOTEMAKER, Cornelis) was born 16 Nov 1891 in Orange City, Iowa. He died 8 Jan 1941 in Lynden, Washington and was buried in Monumenta Cemetery, Lynden, Whatcom County, Washington. BIOGRAPHY: Henry Harrison (Henry Jr) worked on his father's farm for a decade. Upon his return to Lynden in early 1936, Henry Jr. purchased the Daffodil City Dairy. This was a business in which bottled mild was delivered door to door and to stores in town. The bottling works was located in the Spaan milk house. In this business he continued until his death at the aged of 49. He passed away following the discovery of an acute leukemia condition. Henry married Kate DEHOOG. They had the following children:
9. Agnes SPAAN (Antje SLOTEMAKER, Cornelis) was born 30 Jun 1894 in Orange City, Iowa. She died 14 Jan 1959 in Centralia, Washington and was buried in Monumenta Cemetery, Lynden, Whatcom County, Washington. Agnes married Bert DYKSTERHUIS. Bert was born 10 Apr 1890 in Platte, South Dakota. He died 9 Sep 1959 in Washington and was buried in Monumenta Cemetery, Lynden, Whatcom County, Washington. They had the following children:
10. John Dixon SPAAN (Antje SLOTEMAKER, Cornelis) was born 12 Sep 1898. He died 15 May 1970 in Whatcom County, Washington and was buried in Greenacres Memorial Park, Whatcom County, Washington. BIOGRAPHY: The two bachelor brothers, Cornie (Cornelius) and John who went by the name of Jack as well, took leave of the United States and went to Canada during World War I. At the war's end in 1917 John returned to his parents' home, but Cornie continued wheat farming in southern Alberta. John joined his brother Henry on the Spaan dairy. Later John pursued and won the hand of Ruth Peck; thus bachelorhood ended. John married (1) Ruth L PECK. Ruth was born 23 Oct 1909 in Goldfield, Colorado. She died 8 Jul 1957 in Whatcom County, Washington and was buried in Greenacres Memorial Park, Whatcom County, Washington. They had the following children:
John also married (2) Doris BLACKBURN SHEA. 12. Cornelius SLOTEMAKER (Jan, Cornelis) was born 10 Jan 1902 in Lynden, Washington. He died 19 Sep 1952 in Lynden, Washington and was buried in Monumenta Cemetery, Lynden, Whatcom County, Washington. BIOGRAPHY: At the ages of 11 and 9 respectively, Neil and Henry were initiated in the chore of milking, thereby making a vital contribution to the family economy. Then, as now, it was the response to this chore of milking that was the primary deciding factor as to whether farm boys would continue in the family occupation. Apparently we did our jobs quite well, as we were soon given greater responsibilities. Neil, still the more aggressive one, was soon more impressed with the disadvantages of farm chores than with the advantages as regular employment. Trapping fur bearing animals appealed to him, so he acquired a few traps. Muskrats inhabited the marshes and ditches so he soon had a pretty good thing going. If a skunk or mink made the mistake of getting caught in a muskrat trap, that was no offense to Neil; it added a little color and odor to the proceedings, as well as more cash for the pelts. Neil and Henry had an arrangement between them that if Henry would do more of the farm chores, they would share in the net earnings from the sale of the pelts. With these funds, they bought bicycles, sporting goods, etc. As there was an abundance of both upland game birds and water fowl, they soon took to hunting. With hunting, fishing and trapping to balance up farm work, they had quite a wide range of activity. BIOGRAPHY: On December 8, 1941, Neil was seriously injured in a logging accident. He never fully recovered from these injuries. Neil was eventually diagnosed with Hodgkin's disease, from which he died on September 19, 1952. He is buried in Monumenta Cemetery, near his parents and grandparents in the family plots in the southwest corner of the cemetery. Ruth offers a memory of her father: "Dad, in spite of rebelling against the church, was a rigid moralist. He took great pride in always paying his bills, never owing anyone anything, and being honest. One day he and I were driving home on the Van Buren Road and I saw a billfold on the road. So I told him; he stopped and went back and picked it up. It had a fair amount of money init, and this was at a time when we were very hard up, what with all of us kids at home yet. But Dad looked through it, found the owner's name and phone number, phoned him up and gave him our address. The owner came and picked it up, and Dad refused to take any money for giving it back to him" Cornelius married Sylvia NIEVEEN, daughter of Melle NIEVEEN and Addie GROMMERS, on 10 Mar 1927 in Lynden, Washington. Sylvia was born 16 Dec 1904 in Platte, South Dakota. She died 30 Oct 1994 in Lynden, Washington and was buried in Monumenta Cemetery, Lynden, Whatcom County, Washington. They had the following children:
13. Henry SLOTEMAKER (Jan, Cornelis) was born 12 Jan 1904 in Lynden, Washington. He died 8 Aug 1980 in Lynden, Washington and was buried in Monumenta Cemetery, Lynden, Whatcom County, Washington. BIOGRAPHY: Henry writes: After moving out to this farm we saw les of our grandparents, although we did see them most Sundays. When Agnes started school she stayed with Grandpa and Grandma during the school week, coming home on Friday and returning on Sunday. This arrangement was continued for two years. Dick stayed there during his first year of school, 1913-1914. Dad bought a two-wheeled horse drawn open cart on which the three of us, Neil, Agnes and I, rode to school, with Neil as the driver. One bright September morning on our way to school we saw in the distance that a threshing machine - steam powered - was coming to meet us. Now this horse had a mortal fear of threshing machines and saw this monster coming, and indicated by his actions that he was not going to share the road with so formidable a contender. He promptly turned around and headed back for home. Neil managed to slow him down, and again head in the direction of the machine. This time he headed off the road into the field. One of the men with the threshing machine, seeing our dilemma, came to our help and held the horse until the threshing machine had passed, and we could again go merrily on our way. It is difficult to decide if this 'minibus' arrangement of transportation to and from school was an advantage or a disadvantage. I do know it was short-lived. BIOGRAPHY: During all the years that Henry had invested his time and labor in the farm, living with John and Tillie, and sister Jessie who was 15 years younger. a friendship with a young lady named Fanny VanderMey blossomed into a love that could be fully realized only by way of marriage. This took place on October 2, 1936. Henry and Fanny continued to operate the farm together, with John helping to the extent of his ability. Henry and Fanny built a new small house on the farm, with John and Tillie continuing to live in the old farm home. Henry married Fannie VANDER MEY, daughter of Jacob VANDER MEY and Mary DE VOS, on 2 Oct 1936 in Lynden, Washington. Fannie was born 16 May 1904 in New Era, Michigan. She died 30 May 1981 in Lynden, Washington and was buried in Monumenta Cemetery, Lynden, Whatcom County, Washington. They had the following children:
14. Agnes SLOTEMAKER (Jan, Cornelis) was born 28 Sep 1905 in Lynden, Washington. BIOGRAPHY: When Agnes was about one year of age, Tillie took her along on a trip to Iowa to visit her parents and family, staying away most of September and October. The boys (Neil and Henry) would spend the days with their grandparents, Cornelis and Aagje, and the nights at home. BIOGRAPHY: Agnes grew up on a large farm on the Hampton Road; horse and buggy was the main transportation of the day and this is what she and her brothers took to school, except on the days they would walk. As Agnes grew older, she, along with her siblings and friends, belonged to the young Peoples' Society of the church. This was the main social gathering of that day. Little did Agnes know that here she would meet a young man that would change her life. Joe Estie of Everett, spent a part of a summer vacation with the Heutinks who lived on the Trapline Road and not too far from the Slotemaker farm. The courtship officially started at a "Basket Social" at the Young Peoples' Society where Joe managed to purchase Agnes' basket and then walked her home that evening. Joe found his Model T to be a convenient instrument in covering the distance separating them. This stimulated their affection to the point where it was evident that they were convinced that they had the necessary ingredients for matrimony. The wedding took place at the farm home on September 28, 1925; Agnes' 20th birthday. Agnes married Joseph ESTIE "Joe", son of John ESTIE and Alice SALLES, on 28 Sep 1925 in Lynden, Washington. Joe was born 6 Apr 1903 in Holland. He died 12 Apr 1972 in Mesa, Arizona and was buried in Monumenta Cemetery, Lynden, Whatcom County, Washington. They had the following children:
15. Dick SLOTEMAKER (Jan, Cornelis) was born 5 Aug 1908 in Lynden, Washington. He died 31 Dec 1990 in Everett, Washington. Dick married Ann SEBENS, daughter of Thomas SEBENS and Julia KRAPP, on 12 Jun 1934 in Everson, Washington. Ann was born 30 Dec 1909 in Conrad, Montana. She died 13 May 1979 in Everett, Washington. They had the following children:
16. Otto SLOTEMAKER (Jan, Cornelis) was born 14 Dec 1910 in Lynden, Washington. He died 26 Jun 1971 in Eugene, Oregon. Otto married Nellie COOK, daughter of John COOK and Adrianna NICOLAAS, on 4 Sep 1934 in Wenatchee, Washington. Nellie was born 16 Dec 1912 in Stanford, Montana. She died 23 May 1986 in Eugene, Oregon and was buried in Gates Cemetery, Crow, Lane County, Washington. They had the following children:
19. Jitsche SLOTEMAKER "Jessie" (Jan, Cornelis) was born 15 Feb 1919 in Lynden, Washington. BIOGRAPHY: 1918: the family was growing up. Neil reached the age of 17; Otto, the youngest was 8. However, he didn't hold this spot in the family role for long, as on February 15 the family welcomed another baby sister - and daughter - to the family circle, just 4 days less than a year after the departure of Jessie. It seemed almost as if Jessie was with them again, so quite spontaneously she was also named Jessie. BIOGRAPHY: When 22 years old, Jessie was clerking in a store in Bellingham. While helping at a U.S.O. (United Service Organization), a place where service men were fed and entertained, she met a young soldier from Illinois named Mervin Figenbaum. This acquaintance led to a mutual interest in one another. He was sent to France, and was wounded in combat. After sufficient recuperation to travel, he came back to see Jessie. Their interest grew into love and on November 15, 1945 there were married. Jessie married Mervin Eugene FIGENBAUM "Vin", son of Richard FIGENBAUM and Edna HOWARD, on 15 Nov 1945 in Everson, Washington. Vin was born 24 May 1922 in Albion, Illinois. They had the following children:
