 Colby the Survivor Guy

There was this television show called Survivor II, on CBS. A Texan named Colby was on this show. Colby lives in Dallas. The local sports teams have not been doing too well, like the Cowboys and the Rangers, so Colby seems to fill some sort of local void. Even though he didn't win the million dollar prize from the show. Earlier this week Colby was in the Metroplex news because he was at a car dealership in Irving, finally picking up the Aztek car he won on the show. Colby said he wasn't going to keep the car though, that he was going to sell it and drive one of his other cars to LA where he is moving soon.

Saturday, June 30, 2001, Colby was making an appearance in a sporting goods store not far from Durango Texas headquarters. So, the Eyes on Texas decided to join the throng. What a spectacle....

colby2.jpg (40244 bytes)The throng of Colby viewers snaked from the back of the store all around the inside perimeter and out the front door where police lines had been set up to control the possible crowd. The police lines were not needed. No one was the slightest unruly. Perhaps the force of 10 or so policeman helped maintain order. People seemed to be waiting very patiently, like the red-shirted woman in this photo, even though Colby was late, explained on the store loudspeaker as having been held up by the inclement weather....it was raining outside.

Most of these photos are self-explanatory...people having something signed by Colby. Apparently Colby was being some sort of representative of Reebok footwear. Stacks of shoes were piled beside him and there seemed to be a large number of Reebok signs of various sorts.

In the foreground we see some of the bald-headed policemen guarding Colby or the store or the crowd. Or maybe they are just Colby fans.

In person Colby seemed to be bigger than he appeared on TV.  He seems to have a large head. Literally. Many people were heard to comment that Colby looked unlike he did on TV. He also appeared to be tanned an odd orangish-brown color.

colby7.jpg (16240 bytes)Colby seemed to be spending a lot of time with each group of people. At the rate he was meeting and greeting, while being observed by the Eyes on Texas, it would likely take him a couple days to work through the entire crowd.
