We get a lot of questions via email asking questions about things that we've no idea why the emailer would think we would be the source of an answer. Ironically, we often to have the answer. The past week 5 people asked questions about the personalized Texas "It's Like a Whole Other Country" license plate. With a little effort we found out how one goes about getting a personalized Texas License Plate. You will find that information below.

Do you need Maps with good directions? You will find all the Texas Information you need by visiting one of the 12 Texas Travel Information Centers located at convenient locations throughout Texas.

1. How can I personalize my "It's Like A Whole Other Country." license plate?

 For an additional $40 (total $70 annual fee) you may order a personalized plate of five spaces or less. The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) will review each request to make sure your letters are not already taken..

2. Are the vehicle registration fees included in the price of the "It's Like A Whole Other Country." license plate?

No. Fees for your annual registration are not included. 

3. How much do the "It's Like A Whole Other Country" license plates cost?

The "It's Like A Whole Other Country" plate has an annual fee of $30 per year.

4. Will the expiration date of my regular vehicle registration change? 

Yes. If your vehicle is currently registered when the license plate is issued, your vehicle registration expiration date will be adjusted by TxDOT to match the expiration date of the special license plates. If needed, added fees will be collected or credit issued to make an adjustment.

5. What do I do when I pick up my new plate? 

You turn in your current windshield validation sticker and get a new windshield validation sticker. You also pay your regular annual vehicle registration fee. Proof of financial responsibility, such as a liability insurance card is also required at this time.

6. What are the rules for selecting a personalized plate message?

Selections may not consist of more than five characters, symbols, or spaces, OR three characters, symbols, or spaces and one outline of Texas.

  •  Limit of two spaces for punctuation symbols or one outline of Texas.

  • Each square of the selection block may be used to represent one letter or number, punctuation symbol, or space. The silhouette of Texas requires two selection blocks. Use an asterisk (*) to indicate the Texas outlline..

  • The only punctuation symbols that can be used are periods and dashes.

  • Selections should be shown exactly as you wish them to appear on the license plate. Selections that contain alterations or erasures will not be considered.

  • A selection that conflicts with the regular license plate numbering system or that has already been taken will not be approved.

  • TxDOT will let you know you when your personalized plate request has been approved.

  • You may transfer a personalized plate from your current plate to your new plate if it has five spaces or less. 

7. Can I transfer my license plate to another vehicle?

For information about the transfer of specialty license plates, contact your county tax office.

8. When will I receive my "It's Like A Whole Other Country" license plate?

 It will take 2 to 3 weeks for the plates to be made from the time the order is approved by TxDOT. If the plates have already been manufactured at the time of your order, you should be able to pick them up within two weeks of TxDOT's receipt of your order. You will be notified by mail when your plates are ready for you to pick up from the office of your local county tax assessor.
