Map of Wimberley Texas Area

Wimberley sits 46 miles northeast of San Antonio and 28 miles southwest of Austin, about 12 miles west of I-35.

Routes to Wimberley from any direction are scenic drives over relaxing, slow country roads.

Wimberley averages around 300 sunny days a year. Summers are hot, winters are mild. Average annual rainfall is 37 inches.

Wimberley is in Hays County. The town began as a trading post without a name, in 1848. In 1856 William Winters built a gristmill. It became known as Winters' Mill, then in 1864 the Cude family bought the mill and changed the name to Cude's Mill. In 1874 a man named Pleasant Wimberley bought the mill, changing the name to Wimberley's Mill. Then in 1880 a post office application was sent to Austin seeking a post office for the community which the application called Wimberleyville. Austin granted the community its post office, but shortened the name to Wimberley. Wimberley's Mill shut for good in 1925, but the town that shared its name lived on to become the Texas tourist destination it is today.
