San Marcos is the seat of Hays County, located on
Interstate 35, San Marcos is included in the Austin - Round Rock
metropolitan area. The city was founded on the banks of the San Marcos
River. When last counted the population was 52,927. The nickname of San Marcos is San Marvelous. |

San Marcos is 29 miles southwest of Austin, 47 miles northeast of San Antonio. San Marcos sits on the Balcones Fault, which is the boundary between the Coastal Plains and Hill Country. The eastern edge of San Marcos is blackland prairie farmland, the western edge is rolling hills. The San Marcos Rivers comes from the San Marcos Springs, of which Aquarena Springs is one. Several endangered species live in the springs, including the Texas Blind Salamander, Texas Wild Rice and the Fountain Darter. San Marcos River flows through Texas State University and San Marcos, where it is very popular for swimming, tubing, canoeing and fishing. At about the 4 miles mark the San Marcos River is joined by the Blanco River, flowing through Luling, then after 75 miles joins the Guadalupe River near Gonzalez. |
