Grand Lake O' the Cherokees Map

Grand Lake o' the Cherokees Pensacola DamGrand Lake O' the Cherokees is in northeastern Oklahoma, west of the town of Grove.

Work began on Pensacola Dam on the Grand River in 1938 as a New Deal Works Progress Administration project. Pensacola Dam is the longest multiple arch dam in the world, with its main span being made of 51 arches reaching almost a mile in length at 5,145 feet. The dam has 21 spillways, with a 6 unit powerhouse producing 120 megawatts. Two secondary dams a mile east of the main dam, known as "the spillways" have 21 floodgates.

These dams created Grand Lake, which has become a hugely popular Oklahoma recreation resource. The surface area of Grand Lake covers 46,500 acres, with 1,300 miles of shoreline. Grand Lake is a deep and rocky lake, sitting, on average, 742 feet above sea level.

A showboat called the Cherokee Queen has been floating on Grand Lake since the 1940s. The Picture in Scripture Amphitheater show, with panoramic bible dramas, is a top Grand Lake attraction.

Grand Lake is very popular with sailboaters, due to its predictable winds. Golfing, camping, all water sports, biking, hiking and 4x4 trails are popular Grand Lake recreational activities.
