Big Ed gunning the engines at top speed...passing one good campsite after another, following our narrow escape from Rainbow Bridge...finally stopped by the smell of Lulu's Ribs and a crummy beach on the San Juan River...

Ed piloting the houseboat on Lake Powell
While Lulu's ribs were cooking, Durango buried the fish corpses on shore so as to improve the atmosphere. Then he and Jack took off climbing the surrounding petrified dunes. Jack panicked at a slightly sloped traverse and weenied his way back to the boat where he enthralled the group with a dissertation describing his vast knowledge of James Bond movies. Durango climbed high up the slickrock, there were cactus gardens and pools of water, and from the highest point aDurango on a cliff above the San Juan River panoramic view that begged for the camera Durango had left back in the boat. Durango began to climb down a steep section and somehow came into view of his boatmates who began screaming at him that he was nuts, that he was on the edge of a steep cliff. None of them seemed to have learned the extent to which this topography caused optical illusions. Durango knew he was perfectly safe but found the yelling very annoying.
Durango made it back to the boat about the time the ribs became edible. After dinner Wanda pulled out a huge box in which she had Ed caught a fish in the San Juan River assembled all the accouterments necessary to be a bartender. She had been told that this was her onboard position and apparently Wanda took the job seriously. Soon she was mixing all sorts of things following directions in a mixology textbook. After awhile swimming sounded fun. And so it was.  Big Ed was fishing while the swimming was going on, catching several fish. We had to avoid his line.

The above steep precipice was not the cliff that caused the yelling, this was the cliff that made Jack nervous...you can see the houseboat far below...

Big Ed's big fish, believed to be a carp...

Houseboat stopped for the night in a cove on the San Juan RiverAs the moon lit the night, the rock formation hovering above us took on strange shapes, no doubt helped by Wanda's medicines. We all thought it looked like various things, King Kong, a Buffalo, a Tiki God, Russell B (this simian-like person we all knew), and finally a Skull. We all agreed it looked most like a Skull and so this spot became Skull Cove. It was easier to sleep this night. No wild animals came on board. Except for Lulu.
